The role

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and energized Professional Engineer (Geometric Design) to join a leading infrastructure consultancy and contribute to the growth and development of a business with a reputation for technical excellence and strong client relationships. We are looking for candidates with a passion for innovation and providing innovative problem-solving that will add value to SMEC. The successful incumbent shall be highly productive in their day to day tasks and also strive to align themselves and their work ethic to our company values.

Level reports to

Senior Engineer/ Section Manager

Primary purpose of level

This position is responsible for providing professional transportation and geometric design services on projects within the Roads and Highways Functional group in Cape Town, and assistance to Senior Engineers in the successful delivery of transport related projects.

Key Responsibilities 

With a minimum of 5 years of transport and geometric road design experience, your key responsibilities will include:

· Project software tool manager.
· Assisting with budgets, resourcing and outsourcing of work within the section.
· Developing increased design ability and quality.
· Drafting technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality.
· Providing Technical solutions and developing appreciation of outcomes.
· Showcasing ability to check and take responsibility for the work of others.
· Showcasing ability to present / represent their technical work.
· Showcasing ability to draft responses to straightforward bids (assistance sought with commercial aspects).
· Developing knowledge of the commercial aspects of project management.
· Showcasing ability to assign work to others.
· Successful in identifying and following through on leads associated with additional work prospects on the projects they are involved with.
· Developing understanding of Functional Unit technologies and markets.
· Niche technical expertise in the geometric design industry, with focus on niche skill with relevant software
· Supervising small team of engineers.

Key Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Suitable applicants will have/ be:

· Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree/higher degree from accredited University
· Minimum 5 years of transport and geometric design experience with a specific emphasis on high order urban roads and freeways
· Relevant Professional Registration
· Ability to write reports effectively
· Professional delivery and appearance to ensure SMEC image is maintained
· Courteous and business orientated manners when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations
· Co-operative and flexible work style to work in a team environment
